Social Justice

The Billings UU Fellowship encourages everyone to join in our Social Justice projects to educate and effect social justice change within and outside our walls. The following are a few of the projects and organizations we’re involved with:

Habitat for Humanity
In February, the Fellowship joined forces with Mayflower Congregational Church to co-sponsor a concert fundraiser featuring the always-energetic and inspiring singer-songwriter Judy Fjell. Through tickets sales, a bake sale, drink sales, donations, and the "sign the board" fundraiser, volunteers raised almost $1500 for Habitat for Humanity.

Billings Food Bank Donations
One of the Fellowship’s projects is to increase donations to the Billings Food Bank through both food and monetary contributions. The first Sunday of each month is named “Food Bank Sunday” as a reminder to give, but donations can be given any time. To direct money to the Food Bank through the Fellowship, you can write a check and add “Food Bank” to the memo. Food contributions can be placed in the Billings Food Bank basket located at the front of the sanctuary.

Change for Change
Several years ago, the Fellowship started a program to increase assistance to local charities called “Change for Change.” Every Sunday, the collection basket is passed during the service and all of the donated change is given in the Fellowship’s name to one of the following charities chosen by the congregation this year: the Billings Food Bank, Guest at Our Table (a project of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee), Habitat for Humanity, and Not In Our Town.

Audubon Conservation Education Center (ACEC)
The Fellowship raised $1,000 to become a Community Partner of the Audubon Conservation Education Center (ACEC). The ACEC’s mission is to help sustain the natural heritage of the Yellowstone River watershed through education and research designed to engage individuals and communities in the active care of their environment. Additional donations to the ACEC can be made by writing a check to BUUF with “ACEC” in the memo.

Other Activities
In addition to our financial support of the charities listed above, in January the Fellowship began involvement with four social justice projects, including Habitat for Humanity; the UUA Action/Study Issue, Ethical Eating; Not In Our Town; and Movies that Matter.
