Children’s Religious Exploration (CRE)
All that quickens sympathetic imagining, that awakens sensitivity to others’ feelings;
All that enriches and enlarges understanding of the world;
All that strengthens courage, that adds to the love of living;
All that leads to developing skills needed for democratic participation.
All these put together are the curriculum through which children learn.
– Sophia Lyon Fahs
Children are welcome at the Billings Unitarian Universalist Fellowship! We offer a nursery with year-round infant and toddler care as well as Children’s Religious Exploration classes during the school year and activities during the summer.
We seek to create a rich and positive Religious Exploration program that engages the larger Fellowship community with the children and youth, growing and deepening their sense of religious belonging, principled living and self-understanding. We help children honor the beautiful diversity of humanity, celebrate their innate sense of awe and mystery, and develop their questioning mind.
Who we are as Unitarian Universalists should inform how we live in the world. We encourage kids to seek their own truths and clarify their values while living meaningful lives rooted in their principles. Developing an ever-richer sense of their own Unitarian Universalist identity is a key component of our program.
Our CRE Director, Anna Nentwig, who also organizes and trains our group of dedicated volunteer teachers, coordinates the Children’s Religious Exploration program. In conjunction with the CRE committee, they develop a broad curriculum of classes for children to support them in their religious inquiry.
Volunteers play a vital role in our CRE program and teaching can be a very satisfying experience. Teaching in RE gives you the opportunity to have fun with the kids, become more religiously literate, and get to know our parents and children while providing a crucial service for the Fellowship. Anna supplies the teachers with all materials and curricula, but she is also open to “out of the box” teaching ideas.
Unitarian Universalist Principles--the Children’s Version
We believe that each and every person is important.
We believe that all people should be treated fairly.
We believe that our churches are places where all people are accepted and where we keep on learning together.
We believe that each person must be free to search for what is true and right in life.
We believe that everyone should have a vote about things that concern him or her.
We believe in working for a peaceful, fair, and free world.
We believe in caring for our planet earth.
